Some Words from Main Stay:

Since we opened our doors 24 years ago both large and small miracles have been happening at Main Stay. A child born without vocal cords spoke for the first time only weeks after riding. Now she sings through her lesson! While grooming one of our horses an Alzheimer’s patient spoke for the first time in years. Returning six months later he not only recognized the horse but also remembered his name!

Several years ago a very special little girl came to Main Stay. She was born missing a major portion of her brain. Upon arrival she was unable to sit, crawl, talk or control the movement of her eyes. After extensive work from her and love and encouragement from the Main Stay horses, staff and volunteers, our little miracle girl learned to walk without help. Her progression continued until she was able to control her horse by herself and eventually stand on the top of a moving horse!

Of course, things aren’t always so huge…sometimes the miracles are as simple as a child with autism sleeping through one night each week – the day they ride! Sometimes it’s as “simple” as giving someone a reason to get up, get dressed and try again – because today they get to ride. Sometimes it’s as simple as making someone smile, tolerate a new sound, experience a new idea or learn the world can be a kind place.

During our riding season an average of 80 riders per week experience the joy and health benefits of being on and around the horses at Main Stay. Over 125 volunteers and a small dedicated staff show up each week to ensure that someone who needs a chance gets a chance. We are here to witness the rider that no one believes in surprise everyone including themselves. Over and over we have watched as one of our students in need of confidence lift themselves up from “I Can’t” to of course “I Can”!
