Rock On Artists Selected!
Artists are invited to submit designs for the juried public art exhibit ~ “Rock On” ~ to be installed in Woodstock, Illinois throughout the summer of 2010. With the cooperation of the City of Woodstock, this exhibit’s mission is to raise funds and awareness of the work of the Main Stay programs. For more than 20 years, Main Stay has created equine related therapeutic programs that have helped people with physical, developmental, social, and emotional disabilities.
We hope this unique fiberglass form will inspire artistic levels that compliment the beauty of Woodstock for this exhibition and tell the Main Stay’s rocking story of growth in the therapeutic arena. This past year, Main Stay’s horses have been used to heal humans from three to 93 … from Autism to Alzheimer. An auction of the one-of-a-kind rocking horse artwork will be held at the close of the “Rock On” exhibit, and proceeds from the auction will be used toward the continued expansion of the Main Stay facilities and programs.
Artists 18 years or older may submit one to three designs. The fiberglass form is a rocking horse permanently affixed atop a toy chest which measures 56” H x 46” L x 12” W and weighs approximately 65 pounds. The artwork will be mounted to a concrete base at installation.
A stipend of $1,000 will be awarded to each accepted design. The rights to the accepted designs become the exclusive ownership of Main Stay. Accepted artists will be required to create their artwork using their original designs – any alterations to the original design must be approved by the jury/committee. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place artwork as voted by the public.
Designs that add to or alter the original fiberglass form are welcome. Please consider the outdoor location of your artwork. If a design differs from the right side to the left side of the form, please submit designs of both sides. Artists should use materials that can easily withstand weather and possible vandalism. If necessary, artists will be required to touch up and possibly repair artwork before the auction. A list of materials, as well as the form template, is available on the Main Stay website (http://www.mstrp.org).
Accepted artists will be required to pick up the fiberglass form at a location to be determined. Artists will be allowed six weeks for completion of their artwork. Completed artwork must be returned by the artist on or before May 1, 2010.
Entry deadline of application and design is February 22, 2010.
